How it works

An MC number is the docket FMCSA issues with interstate for-hire operating authority. A carrier needs active authority on that docket to haul regulated freight across state lines for hire. Authority can be active, pending, revoked or inactive, and it can change between one load and the next.

Enter the MC number and this tool shows the authority status, how many days it has been active, and the carrier's PASS, REVIEW or FAIL verdict with reasons. If the docket is broker-only, the result says so: a broker cannot haul the load itself. Verified against official FMCSA records.

A new authority is not a red flag on its own, but authority under 90 days old is marked REVIEW so you take a closer look. Always match the MC number to the company name, phone and email on the rate confirmation.

Questions

What does an active MC number mean?

The docket has active operating authority on record with FMCSA. It does not by itself mean insurance is on file or that there is no out-of-service order; the verdict checks those too.

Can I enter just the digits?

Yes. On this page, digits are treated as an MC number, so 123456 is looked up as MC123456. FF and MX numbers work too.

Why does a broker MC number fail?

The verdict answers whether the company can haul freight as a motor carrier. A broker-only docket returns FAIL with not_a_carrier. Use the broker authority check to see a broker's status.

Is it free?

Yes. The free plan is 100 lookups a month with no card. USDOT 53467 is a free example that never counts.
