Carrier vetting API and MCP server for AI assistants
Beta: CarrierVet is in active testing. Verify critical decisions against FMCSA SAFER, and report anything that looks wrong to hello@carriervet.dev.
No key yet? Get a free API key: 50 lookups a month, no card. Without a key, the form builds the curl command for you. USDOT 53467 is a free example.
CarrierVet is a REST API and a remote MCP server (Streamable HTTP) for vetting US motor carriers. An assistant can call it with an MC or USDOT number and get a structured PASS, REVIEW or FAIL verdict with reasons it can quote, instead of reading and interpreting a raw record. Verified against official FMCSA records.

-H 'content-type: application/json' -H 'accept: application/json, text/event-stream' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'
Or call the REST API directly
curl -s https://carriervet.dev/v1/carriers/53467/risk -H "authorization: Bearer $KEY"
What the assistant gets
- One verdict: PASS, REVIEW or FAIL with the reasons, so you do not have to read a raw record.
- Risk signals: new authority, recent phone, email or address changes, and contact details shared with other carriers, plus a 0–100 risk score with reason codes.
- Change history: dated authority, insurance and contact changes for the carrier.
- Alerts: put a carrier on a watchlist and get an email or signed webhook when its record changes (paid plans, open after the beta).
- Lookup receipts: every lookup returns a
receipt_id, a dated, saved copy of the response with its SHA-256, so you can show what you checked and when. - Reliability: stored copies keep answering when FMCSA systems are slow, and every response says how fresh and complete its data is.
Example prompt
“Vet carrier MC123456 before I tender a load: is its authority active, is insurance on file, and what is its risk score and why?”
FAQ
Which AI assistants work with it?
Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with a Bearer header, such as Claude Desktop, Cursor and other mcp.json clients. ChatGPT and other connector UIs can add the endpoint as a custom MCP connector. Assistants without MCP can call the REST API through the OpenAPI spec.
How is usage counted?
Each carrier tool call costs one monthly lookup, the same as the REST API, with the same key and per-minute limits. get_receipt is free, and get_usage reports what is left. Rate-limited calls return retry_after.
Can the assistant explain its answer?
Yes. Every carrier response includes verdict_reasons with a code, the check it came from and a plain message, and the risk response lists reason codes with points. Each lookup also returns a receipt_id the assistant can cite.
Is it free?
The free plan includes 50 lookups a month with no card. Batch lookups and watchlist alerts are on paid plans, which open after the beta.
Is the output a guarantee or a consumer report?
No. Results are informational, derived from FMCSA records and provided as-is. They are not a guarantee of a carrier's safety or legitimacy and not a consumer report.

Related
Not a consumer report. Carrier data is derived from records maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is provided as-is, may be delayed or incomplete, and is not a consumer report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Do not use it to evaluate a natural person for credit, insurance, employment, or any other purpose covered by the FCRA. Carriers can request a review of a record or flag.
