FAQ

Where does the data come from?

Every lookup is verified against official FMCSA carrier registration, authority, and insurance records. On top of the record, CarrierVet adds normalized fields, daily change detection with a dated history, recent-change and shared-contact fraud signals, and a 0–100 risk score with reason codes. New carriers are fetched from FMCSA on first lookup and served from a stored copy after that. The copy is refreshed when it is more than a day old, or after 10 minutes if an FMCSA source did not answer, and out-of-service orders are checked on every lookup. Each response includes data_quality and an x-data-freshness header.

Who uses it?

Freight brokers vetting carriers at onboarding and before tender, shippers checking who picks up their freight, factoring companies screening carriers and debtors, and TMS and load-board developers adding carrier checks to their products.

How is this different from Highway, Carrier Assure, or RMIS?

Those are onboarding platforms with sales-led contracts. CarrierVet is an API with public, self-serve pricing that you call from your own TMS, spreadsheet workflow, or app.

What counts as a lookup?

Each profile, risk, history, or search call counts as one lookup, including not-found results. A batch call counts one per unique identifier it actually checked; identifiers it could not check are returned as not_checked and not charged. Lookups of the example carrier, USDOT 53467, are free. Monitoring itself is not metered.

Is there a free tier?

Yes. The free sandbox includes 50 lookups a month with no card. Your key works right away for 5 lookups; confirm your email to unlock the rest. Monitoring, webhooks, and batch lookups are on paid plans.

Can I cancel or switch plans?

Yes. Plans are month-to-month or yearly (yearly = 10× monthly, so two months free). Use Manage billing below (or POST /v1/billing/portal) to open Stripe's customer portal, where you can switch plan or billing interval (prorated) or cancel at the end of the paid period. An account holds one subscription at a time. If a payment fails, the account runs on free-plan limits until the card is updated in the portal and Stripe collects the payment.

Is the risk score a guarantee a carrier is safe?

No. It's an informational signal derived from FMCSA records to help you prioritize manual review. A low score does not mean a carrier is legitimate or safe, and a high score does not mean a carrier is fraudulent. It is not an FMCSA safety rating and not a consumer report. You make your own tendering decisions; see the Terms.

How do I contact CarrierVet?

Email hello@carriervet.dev for support or billing questions. Carriers who think a record or flag is wrong can request a review.

Not a consumer report. Carrier data is derived from records maintained by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is provided as-is, may be delayed or incomplete, and is not a consumer report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Do not use it to evaluate a natural person for credit, insurance, employment, or any other purpose covered by the FCRA. CarrierVet does not return EINs or company officer names.
