How it works
For-hire interstate carriers must keep liability insurance filed with FMCSA. Insurers file the proof electronically, and when a policy is cancelled the cancellation is filed too. Insurance is one of the most common things to lapse between loads.
Enter an MC or USDOT number and this tool shows whether the required liability (BI&PD) coverage is on file and the amount required, plus cargo and bond filings where they apply. Missing or lapsed insurance makes the verdict FAIL; an unknown status is REVIEW. Verified against official FMCSA records.
"On file" means the filing is on record. It does not tell you policy exclusions or the cargo limit for your commodity, so keep asking for a certificate of insurance and confirm it with the agent.
Questions
What does lapsed mean?
A cancellation was filed and no replacement filing is on record. Carriers that switch insurers can show lapsed until the new filing arrives, so re-check before you tender.
What does unknown mean?
The insurance status could not be confirmed for this lookup, for example because a source did not answer. The verdict is REVIEW, not PASS.
Does this replace a certificate of insurance?
No. It confirms the federal filing. A certificate naming you as holder, confirmed with the agent, is still the way to check the policy itself.
Is it free?
Yes. The free plan is 100 lookups a month with no card.
